The Ministry of Lector, or of Proclaiming the Word, is one of the more important ministries restored by the Second Vatican Council. The Lector, along with the Presider of the Liturgy, is entrusted with the task of making the Word of God come alive by proclaiming it for the community. All through scripture we are told about the power of the Word of God spoken to the prophets and the people. It is no less powerful today when proclaimed as part of the liturgy. God is present in the proclaimed Word.
This Ministry, therefore, is an essential and important part of the liturgy. The minister has the responsibility to proclaim the Word in such a way that the words are clearly heard by the listeners and the meaning is clear. It requires personal skills as a reader and sufficient training and preparation to be able to carry out the task in the best possible manner. Lectors are given adequate time in training to ensure that they are capable and comfortable with the task and are given sufficient time to prepare for their scheduled assignments.
