The Sacred Heart Peace Community
The Sacred Heart Peace Community grew out of the mission of Sacred Heart Church " to stand on the side of life with all the struggling people of Camden and of the world." Formed in the fall of 2002, we wished to create opportunities for the parish and neighborhood to participate in faith-based resistance to war and all forms of violence. We pray and work to create Christ's peace in ourselves, our homes, our neighborhoods and our world.
In February 2008, the Community dedicated its new home in Camden: Brigid’s
House serves as the center of our organizing and a venue for peace and justice
events, as well as prayer and poetry. It is located at 1719 Ferry Avenue and
is occupied and maintained by our Hearthkeeper, Cassie MacDonald, and her
canine companion, Frankie.
Brigid’s House is also home to the Sacred Heart Center for Conscientious Objection, an initiative of the Peace Community to create a welcoming space for anyone discerning questions of military service or otherwise seeking to act according to his or her conscience. Collaborating with the Camden Diocesan Office of Justice, we are creating a curriculum for conscience formation on war and peace for Catholic youth. We welcome the participation of teachers, youth ministers, counselors, parents and, of course, young people in this work.
Each year in February, we host an annual Gathering for Peace and Justice, featuring a keynote speaker and small group workshops--many offered by the gifted members of our own Camden community. It is a day to be informed and inspired, and to recognize the wider community of peacemakers to which we belong. Other recent events have included visits from veteran peacemaker Fr. Louie Vitale, OFM and former CIA analyst Ray McGovern.
The Sacred Heart Peace Community meets at Brigid’s House twice monthly: 10 am – 12 pm on the first Sunday of the month and 8:30 am – 10:30 am on the third Sunday of the month. Social time and prayer are included in each meeting as well as our work. All are welcome!
