The Sacred Heart Peace Community
The Sacred Heart Peace Community grew out of the mission of Sacred Heart Church: " . . . to stand on the side of life with all the struggling people of Camden and of the world." Formed in the fall of 2002, we wished to create opportunities for the parish and neighborhood to participate in faith-based resistance to war and all forms of violence. We seek together the ways to create Christ's peace in ourselves, in our homes, our neighborhoods and our world.
Blessed with a diversely-gifted and energetic membership, the Community has enabled the parish to participate in several national and local peace marches, as well as a local September 11 Circle of Hope Vigil on the Camden waterfront. We initiated a faith dialogue with a Muslim community and sponsored events jointly with the Friday Night Community, including a screening of the documentary film, "Bowling for Columbine." On Valentine's Day 2004, we hosted a Gathering for Peace and Justice, attended by over 100 people from South Jersey and Philadelphia. Other projects include our homemade peace prayer candles, wreaths for the Fair of the Heart, origami crane-folding at the Hearts and Hands Festival and peace buttons for Mother's Day. Look out for our new bulletin board adjacent to the Children's Chapel for news, ideas and inspiration.
The Sacred Heart Peace Community meets twice monthly in the prayer garden, when weather permits, or in the Children's Chapel. All are most welcome to join us!
